Describe the decision you need to make
Start with the immediate question: whether to sign an agreement, respond to a notice, pursue payment, or address an employment issue. State what has already happened and what remains proposed. Identify the people or entities involved, the location, and your role. If more than one matter is connected, explain the connection without assuming that the same legal procedure will address them all.
Prepare a chronology that can be checked
List the important events in date order and connect each one to a document or other source. Mark estimates and disputed facts clearly. Include developments that may weaken your position; discovering them early is more useful than allowing them to appear unexpectedly later. A one-page chronology can introduce the file, while the supporting materials provide the detail when the lawyer needs it.

Keep originals and translations together
Bring the complete agreement, attachments, amendments, notices, and relevant payment or communication records. Provide the Chinese documents even if you also have an English translation. Identify who prepared the translation and flag any uncertain wording. Do not replace an original record with an edited summary. Ask the firm how to share sensitive material and whether it first needs information to check for conflicts.
Clarify who will advise you and on what terms
Verify the lawyer and firm through appropriate official professional information channels. Ask who will handle the matter, what the consultation covers, and whether further work requires a separate engagement. Mainland legal engagements and fees are handled through the law firm under the Lawyers Law. Request clear written terms, including translation, expert, travel, or filing expenses where these may be relevant.
Leave with questions resolved or assigned
Ask which facts remain uncertain, what documents should be obtained next, and whether a notice or filing period requires urgent action. Confirm whether the lawyer has accepted an ongoing mandate; a consultation alone may not include monitoring every deadline. Write down the agreed next step and who is responsible. Advice can identify options and risks without guaranteeing a particular outcome.
